Christ-centered comfort...

...from the Heidelberg Catechism:

Question 1:  What is your only comfort in life and death?

Answer:  That I, with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ; who with his precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, wherefore by his Holy Spirit he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready, to live unto him.

Christ Our Mediator

I just finished reading (several times) C.J. Mahaney's little book entitled "Christ our Mediator".  Its an incredible book that is basically a sermon modified and put in book form.  Here are a few snippets from the book for your own edification:

"R.C. Sproul wrote that the most perplexing theological question is not why there's suffering in this world, but why God tolerates us in our sinfulness."

"Lest I forget Gethsemane
  Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
  Lead me to Calvary"
  -Jennie Hussey

"We never move on from the cross, only into a more profound understanding of the cross."-David Prior

"Abide hard by the cross and search the mystery of His wounds."-C.H. Spurgeon

"The subject of the cross, Spurgeon once said, 'is worthy of an angel's tongue.  And this also is true:  It needs Christ himself completely to expound it.'"

"The debt was so great, that while man alone owed it, only God could pay it."-Anselm

"The glory of the gospel is this:  The one from whom we need to be saved is the one who has saved us."-R.C. Sproul

"Divine love triumphed over divine wrath by divine self-sacrifice."-John Stott

"Oh help me understand it,
Help me to take it in,
What it meant to Thee, the Holy One,
To Bear away my sin."-Katherine Kelly

"What dominated Jesus' mind was not so much the living of His life but the giving of it."-John Stott

"Twas I that shed that sacred Blood,
I nailed him to the Tree,
I crucified the Christ of God,
  I joined the mockery."
-Horatius Bonar

"Before we can begin to see the cross as something done for us, we have to see it as something done by us."-John Stott

"He's alone so that we might never be alone.  He cries out to God, 'Why have you forsaken me?' so that you and I will never have to make a similar cry.  He was cut off from His Father so that we can boldly say, 'Nothing shall separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.'  He's forsaken so that we might be forgiven."-C.J. Mahaney

Is Christianity Cool?

Have Christians been seduced by cool?  Here is a snippet from a great article by Tullian Tchividjian

"Christianity, according to Jesus, is not cool.

There, I said it.

I’ll even go a step further: If what’s fashionable in our society interests you, then true Christianity won’t. It’s that simple.

Think about it. Jesus said some pretty unfashionable stuff. If you want to live, you must die. If you want to find your life, lose it. He talked about self-sacrifice and crosses and suffering and death. He talked about the need to lay down our lives for those who hate us and hurt us. He talked about serving, not being served; seeking last place, not first. He talked of gouging out your eye and cutting off your hand if they cause you to sin.

He was making the profound point that daily Christian living means daily Christian dying — dying to our fascination with the values of this world and living for something infinitely larger than whatever happens to be in vogue at the moment."  If you want to read the rest, then go here.
